What was your route into Engineering?
It was fairly traditional, A-levels followed by a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have always had an interest in science and how things work from a young age and I was encouraged to go into engineering by my school and family. I undertook a Summer placement in building services then applied for graduate positions following completion of my degree. I ended up working for the company I undertook my placement with.

Is engineering different from what you expected?
Not really, the use of scientific principles, innovation, problem-solving and team-working is what I expected and what I do today.

What is the best part of your job?
The knowledge that I have designed will contribute to improving people’s lives in terms of accessibility. It is also great to see something that you have designed in real life, in operation. In my role, I particularly enjoy managing the production of designs in a busy, creative, and motivated design team.

How has your job changed as you’ve progressed?
As I have progressed, I have taken on more responsibility and a leadership role which has enabled me to develop and shape the design team, giving more opportunities to bring in new talent and provide mentoring to engineers and apprentices.

What would you say to someone considering a career in engineering?
It’s a very rewarding career as results can be seen. There are many opportunities within engineering to develop your career in areas that you find most interesting. It is very stimulating if you have a creative or scientific mind and you will learn something new every day.
