Katie Wickham
Apprentice Technician, Level Crossings team
What was your route into Engineering?
After finishing my GCSE’s I started my career working for an events company, where I did a business admin apprenticeship. After two years, I moved to SYSTRA where I first worked as a Document Controller. I soon became interested in the engineering side of the business after seeing other women working in these roles. I was then given the opportunity to move to the Level Crossings Team and to start my career in engineering. I am currently studying Railway Design Engineering and I eventually hope to get a degree.
Is engineering different from what you expected?
My idea of engineering has changed a great deal over the past years. At school I never considered engineering as a career as I didn’t know all the different aspects that come under ‘engineering’. Once I learned more about engineering design, I knew it would be something I’d find interesting. I’ve now worked in engineering for just over a year and so far, I’m really enjoying it.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is getting to work on a large variety of projects and eventually get my designs built. I also enjoy working with schools to encourage pupils to choose engineering as a career.
What would you say to someone considering a career in engineering?
Engineering is a very broad career which has lots of very interesting aspects to it. I’d say if you’re interested in starting a career in engineering, don’t hesitate!
