Fingal Active Travel Strategy

The draft Active Travel Strategy is a first for Fingal as it looks to the future of Active Travel and transport in the county.

The overarching ambition of the Active Travel Strategy is to make walking, cycling and wheeling an attractive and convenient choice for journeys in Fingal, particularly those under 5km. By developing and promoting accessible, safer and well-planned Active Travel opportunities, this Strategy will help to establish Fingal as a pioneering county for Active Travel.

As the fastest growing county in Ireland and in the context of climate change and sustainable development, the Council wish to build Active Travel into everyday life as part of normal daily routines – improving the quality of life for all who live, visit, work and study in the County. The Strategy sets out a wide array of infrastructure and initiatives designed to support that goal, while also providing for a greater focus on effective sustainable travel solutions in planning and decision making across the Council’s work programme.

Created by Fingal County Council’s Department of Environment, Climate Action and Active Travel with support from SYSTRA, the draft Active Travel Strategy is now out for public consultation as the Council invite the public to view and respond to the draft. As part of the development of the Strategy, SYSTRA supported the Council with a scoping workshop, a policy and plan review, the collation of best practice case studies, strategy development, and document design and branding. SYSTRA is currently undertaking engagement activities with a number of key stakeholders to gain their views, expertise and insight into the draft strategy, along with supporting the Council with wider online public consultation including survey design and two public webinars. Following the consultation period, SYSTRA will work with Fingal County Council to undertake analysis of the feedback and incorporate this into the final Strategy.
