What is your job title and department?
I am a Geotechnical Technician Apprentice in the Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental team.
Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
I wanted to get actual hands-on experience, instead of just learning theory, whilst getting paid for it. I couldn’t stand the thought that I would have to be in debt for a significant amount of time in my life if I chose to go to university. I knew that on an apprenticeship you could get the same professional qualifications as at university without this major disadvantage. An apprenticeship also gives you an insight into the career path that you choose, it can help you chose the right path for you early and if you don’t like this path, there is still time to try a different route.
What is the best part of your apprenticeship?
I think the best part of an apprenticeship is being able to get hands-on experience that you wouldn’t get at university. Especially because many companies value this more than just a qualification.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
I would say go for it! I personally think that this is the best option if you are thinking about where to go next.
