Sam O’Sullivan

What is your job title and department?
My current job title is Assistant Engineer and I work in the Bridges Team. I am currently studying in my final year of my Level 6 degree apprenticeship, which will finish in July this year. This was after completing the following courses:

  • Level 3 advanced apprenticeship (Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the built environment and level 3 NVQ) – 2 years
  • Level 4 Higher National Certificate, Level 5 Higher National Diploma and Level 5 NVQ in Construction Management – 3 years
  • Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship (BSc top-up degree in Civil engineering) – 2 years

Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
I decided to pursue the Apprenticeship route because I wanted to gain invaluable work experience, alongside working full time and earning a salary. Looking back over the past 6 years of my Apprenticeship, I am so glad I chose this route and would recommend it to anyone considering a career in civil engineering. It is difficult completing the study alongside working full time, however, the benefits far outweigh the challenging times.

What is the best part of your apprenticeship?
The best part about my Apprenticeship is the progression and career opportunities that are available to me. The varied work is also a benefit, having the opportunities to work on technical aspects such as detailed design work or more visual work such as 3D modeling and drawing production. There is also an abundance of site surveys and inspection work. Additionally, being able to mentor others is an important aspect for me, being able to see others develop around you and follow in your footsteps is a great feeling.

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
I would recommend to anyone considering an Apprenticeship, to attend a careers fair and speak directly to individuals who are working in the industry. There are vast amounts of disciplines in the civil engineering field to consider. Another great opportunity is to try and obtain work experience with a consultancy or contractor. There are also open days at various colleges, a popular one being Leeds College of Building where they can offer you advice regarding courses. If you are serious about a career in engineering, then there are lots of vacancies on the Apprenticeship website available.
