Suffolk EfW

SYSTRAs’ approach to the multi-disciplinary design of Suffolk EfW facility in Great Blakenham has produced a high-quality building that is both innovative and environmentally conscious.

The resultant building is a state of the art BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated facility; a combination of a complex process plant and a power station accepting 269,000 tonnes of household waste per year, otherwise destined for landfill, and producing a peak output of 25MW of electricity.

The process buildings house a 12 tonne waste crane and a 130 tonne turbine generator, in which SYSTRA designed the supporting frames/foundations incorporating specialist fatigue and vibration analysis to provide an efficient design solution.

SYSTRAs’ intricately engineered ground floor slab allows for a complex series of supporting plinths and service trenches to facilitate process operations.

Designed to meet exceptionally high standards in all aspects from operation, performance and emissions, the building also provides facilities for the local community to enhance education and understanding of the role of waste management and energy production in the UK.

SYSTRA carried out the role of lead designer on the project, delivering the architectural, civil and structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and ground investigation, fire engineering, landscape architecture as well as environmental, building services, highways and drainage design as part of our coordinated approach to multi-disciplinary delivery.
