Leven Road Gasworks, Poplar

The Challenge

SYSTRA was commissioned in 2018 by Berkeley Homes as Access & Inclusive Design consultants for a hybrid planning application concerning the redevelopment of the Leven Road Gasworks site in Poplar. The full detailed application included 600 residential dwellings, employment, retail, leisure and community land uses.

SYSTRA’s Role

As part of the scheme, SYSTRA advised on the unit layouts, general site plans and the accessibility of the pedestrian environment with regards to the local transport links.

The Site presented multiple challenges, largely due to the sloping topography around the River Lea and conflicting demands amongst the client, architects, landscape architects, transport consultant and fire consultant. The Site is currently barren industrial land fronting the west bank of the River Lea near its confluence with the Thames.

The hybrid planning application was subsequently approved by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in October 2019.
