Kingston University - Penrhyn Road Campus

The Challenge

SYSTRA was commissioned by Kingston University in 2019 to provide transport and highways consultancy services in support of the relocation of the Enginerring Faculty from Roehampton Vale to the Penrhyn Road Campus. This commission follows on from our ongoing involvement with Kingston University’s Vision 2025 Masterplan, consisting of the development of its estate across all campuses.

SYSTRA’s Role

SYSTRA first undertook a transport study to identify key transport and highways issues around the Penrhyn Road Campus and possible solutions, to ensure any increase in staff and students associated with the relocation would not negatively impact the local area. An accessibility assessment was undertaken to identify staff travel patterns, as well as public transport, park and ride and active travel facilities available. The study concluded that the relocation could be implemented without a negative material impact to site users, local residents and the transport network surrounding the Site.

We advised the project architects, Haworth Tomkins, on logistical matters associated with the different types of vehicles requiring access to the Penrhyn Road Campus. This involved undertaking numerous vehicle tracking assessments to test options for locations of the required facilities and infrastructure, including removal of compacted waste containers as well as delivery of vehicles for the University’s engineering workshop and mobile laboratories.

A planning application is anticipated to come forward in 2020 for the new Engineering Faculty at the Penrhyn Road Campus.
