Our Expertise

As Crossrail’s Principal Contractor for the lengthening of Platform 1 at Hayes and Harlington station, SYSTRA (formerly TSP Projects) supported Crossrail’s sustainability policy by preparing a Green Travel Plan for travel to and from the construction site.

The plan was designed to minimise disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood and its residents, to control nuisance parking, and to help Crossrail meet its carbon reduction targets by encouraging more sustainable travel methods such as walking, cycling, use of public transport and vehicle sharing. Our plan also encouraged people to avoid travel altogether by using teleconferencing, video conferencing, and other alternatives where possible.

Before the project began, SYSTRA provided all staff with bus and train timetables and a map showing transit stops near the site. During construction we monitored travel with site attendance sheets. We had expected to monitor about 600 visits to the site but the resulting data showed the number to be closer to 2,000.

Through effective engagement with staff and subcontractors the targets we set out in the plan were substantially exceeded:

• Single occupancy vehicle travel was reduced by 40% from the predicted levels pre-construction
• 48% of all trips to site were made by sustainable travel modes
• 50% of all management trips to site were made by sustainable travel modes
• 52% of total time spent travelling to and from site was made using more sustainable methods of transport, helping reduce the impact on local air quality and reducing the contribution to climate change
