Castle Bar Park Station
Shortlisted in the 2015 UK Rail Industry Awards for Small Project of the Year
SYSTRA (formerly TSP Projects) offers a range of services, we are an industry leader in Modular platforms and can draw upon varied design and operational experience from across our workforce to value manage solutions, providing best value to the client. This was demonstrated in our work on the Castle Bar Park station.
When Sisk Rail had the opportunity to replace a failing concrete trestle platform at Castle Bar Park Station in London, time was of the essence as the 600mm drop was restricting access to trains and reducing services. Sisk Rail engaged SYSTRA to design and develop a solution which would address:-
- Existing ground conditions, which required a steel pile foundation.
- Minimise the use of heavy plant and machinery, as there was no access behind the platform.
- Reduce track access.
- Reduce the site programme to as small a time as possible.
To meet these requirements SYSTRA designed a new 3-bay modular platform; this platform system uses lightweight components that are transported to the site and installed manually but allow this system to span 3.66m between pairs of small diameter piles, enabling difficult ground conditions to be overcome.
The system is designed to be 75% completed during daytime works with the rest able to be installed during line blocks between trains, reducing possession time. The replacement of the 33 metres of failing platform was completed in only two weeks. Through the team’s proactive approach and the inbuilt flexibility of the system, problems, such as unknown buried services and other obstructions required the piles to be moved were dealt with effectively and with no disruption to the site programme. Both Sisk Rail and Network Rail were very satisfied with the speed of installation, flexible approach of SYSTRA teams and the quality of the product.
