THE CHALLENGE

SYSTRA worked within a multidisciplinary design team, including City Offices Real Estate (Development Managers), Make (Architects) and Gerald Eve (Town Planners), to design a 27-storey office and retail development near Moorgate station in London. One of the key transport challenges was to ensure the pedestrian comfort levels were improved on surrounding streets, given the high pedestrian flows both now and predicted for the future with the opening of the Elizabeth line entrance at Moorgate at the end of 2018. In addition, a facility was required to cater for 750 long-stay cycle parking spaces, together an off-street servicing solution.

SYSTRA’S ROLE

SYSTRA prepared the Transport Assessment, Delivery and Servicing Plan, Travel Plan, Waste Management Plan and Access Statement that was submitted with the planning application. We worked closely with the design team to develop state-of-the-art cycle facilities, with a dedicated entrance with ramped and lift access to the basement.

We undertook in-depth pedestrian comfort analysis to assess the impact on pedestrian flow on nearby streets. TfL provided a positive response to the application and commented that the cycle provision was ‘exemplary’.

The scheme was awarded resolution to grant at Planning Committee in December 2017. SYSTRA has subsequently been retained to provide ongoing advice in relation to the S278 highway works and construction management.
